"Crying will get you nowhere, my dear."
IC: Astrid rubbed her eyes and made her tears disappear as fast as she could, after being discovered and hearing a too familiar voice behind her. It seemed to be hers but it sounded deeper, anyway, she didn’t want anyone to see her crying, not even herself. She turned around slowly to face a young woman who seemed to be her older self; her eyes widened and her hands covered her mouth quickly. “How? What? Why? Where did you come from?” She asked in a sobbing and totally amazed voice. “It’s impossible!”. She still couldn’t go out of her astonishment but tried to recover her composure. “I wasn’t crying anyway…” She added wanting to hide her weaknesses even from herself.
She smiled and shook her head lightly. “No good hiding the tears. I cried them first. I’ve seen them all before, and I’ve seen the ones yet to fall. I don’t know exactly why I’m here. But I would imagine it’s because right now… You’re life could go one of several ways… I’m here I think, to help. So remind me why these tears were shed and we’ll fix this.” She stared at herself and made a mental note that blue really was her colour. She should wear more in the future. She couldn’t help but smile, she was as tough as ever. What a relief, I’m still strong, she thought. Even when faced with herself, still denying weakness. “I guess I should start by saying I am you in the future… But my life, everything I have… Kind of depends on what you do soon. So I’ll give you five questions now, and then we start fixing this.” She knew she’d have questions. You see yourself in the future, wouldn’t you?
Young Astrid frowned thinking how she could be actually saying that to herself, clearly her mind had changed as she grew up. She crossed her arms in a bothered still surprised gesture, she was surprised because of two facts: Her older self seemed to have come from the future and was right there teaching her life lessons, that could be useful for her but, maybe she didn’t want to learn them right then, and because she didn’t think her older self would be so different from her current one. “You’re sure?” She asked in a bit bothered and still sobbing tone. She didn’t like to be annoyed while she cried, not even by herself. “Well, in that case, thank you for coming back here but I don’t think I need much help by now, however you’re far much more experienced than me, so your help will be worth it and accepted for sure”. She rubbed her nose slightly and made sure she dried her tears before speaking again. “Okay, the thing is that I did something very wrong. Hiccup was trying the earliest version flying suit, I’m sure you know about it, and he needed my help to check out how it worked in the sky. Of course, Toothless and Stormfly helped us too, but it failed, or re-phrase, I failed and he hurt himself when he almost fell down before Toothless got him. I think he hit himself with a rock or something because he lost his conscience. It was all my fault, I was supposed to tell him about the height and latitude we were at and if I hadn’t failed he probably wouldn’t have fallen. He’s unconscious in his bed, just like after he defeated the Red Death, I’ve gone to see him but I couldn’t stay there for much time, because of how blameful I am, so I ran away and here I am. Still feeling blameful”. She gestured during her speech and looked down for most of it but when it ended, she looked back up at her old self. “Well, enough backstory, now it’s my turn with questions. How are things in Berk by then? Is Hiccup okay? Have we married? Have the other dragon trainers changed too much and how about our dragons? And the last one is, will Hiccup ever forgive me for my failure?” She placed her hands together in a wishful expression after she pronounced the last one and formuled all of them very quickly.
Astrid smiled. She could have guessed those would be the questions she’d ask herself. And she nodded, remembering all too well the first prototypes of the flight suit. She laughed lightly.
"Hiccup will be fine and determined as ever to go back out and try the suit again. Seriously, don’t fight it. You’ll lose every argument you have about it. He’s REALLY persuasive. Apparently enough so that yes, you agree to marry him. " She remembered the wedding fondly. "the other riders haven’t changed much in the great scheme of things, still the same as ever. But both Fishlegs and Snotlout started trying to win ruff over when they were about 18 19. Seriously, after a while it gets sad. Berk just gets more amazing. Sure we’ve got our roadblocks, some tough times… " She felt tears burn herself. "But we always come out stronger. All of us. And Hiccup does forgive you. You’ll both make other mistakes, but you’ll airways forgive each other. And in the end you’ll have the greatest leverage. And trust me, use it! "
